Local best-selling children's book author, Ms. Ruth Spiro, spent a day at Forest Elementary School this week, meeting with all of the different grade levels.

Her first stop of the day was with the kindergarteners, who were excited to meet a real-life author!

The book Ms. Spiro chose to read to them that morning was titled "Growing Together," illustrated by Paola Escobar. The book was just released, and she let the students know that they were the first ones she read it to.

Before she read the book, she showed the students the cover of the book and how it was unique in that when it was removed it gave the appearance of being underground.

"Growing Together" is a story about a child and a seedling that spend the summer growing together in a local urban community garden, thanks to the help of firefighters, chefs, shopkeepers and many more members of the community.

As she was reading the book she asked the students questions about various vegetables and whether or not they enjoyed them.

When she was done reading the story the students had an opportunity to ask her questions and share their own stories of gardening.

Students asked Ms. Spiro how she became and author and how she came up with ideas for her books.
