Fifth Graders are Introduced to PEMDAS

Fifth Graders are Introduced to PEMDAS
Forest

Forest Elementary School fifth graders in Mr. Matt Peebles class have been working on new mathematical concepts.

During a recent class, Mr. Peebles posted different math problems around the classroom.

He then gave the students post-it notes and asked them to move around the room and solve them.

Mr. Peebles reminded the students that the goal wasn't to get the answer correct right now, but to learn the steps involved to solve these types of problems in an effort to get used to them.

Once done, they signed their name on the post-it and left it by the problem.

He encouraged the students to look at others' post-its to get another perspective as to how to solve the problems.

Mr. Peebles then spent time teaching the students the order of mathematical operations known as PEMDAS (parentheses, exponents, multiplication, division, addition and subtraction).

Mr. Peebles worked together with the students to solve problems using the PEMDAS order of operation.

The students then had time to solve these math problems in their workbooks in groups or by themselves.
